5 Do’s and Don’ts for Online Marketing

5 Do's and Don'ts for Online Marketing

Most business owners have considered website marketing techniques to grow their business, but are unsure how to tell what works and what doesn’t.  There are many scams, and misinformation is common. Here are five Do’s and Don’ts that will encourage a successful online marketing campaign.

5 Dos for Online Marketing

  1. Do search engine optimization, or SEO, to rank higher in organic search results. Many companies provide services that are comprehensive while remaining affordable and professional.
  2. Do review your website design. Once the visitor lands on your website, you need a page that is appealing and eye-catching. The layout of the page, along with a user-friendly design, are crucial to maximize a visitor’s attraction and retention. Your entire website needs careful attention to detail and ease of use.
  3. Do use Pay-Per-Click advertising. In addition to organic SEO results, paid advertising can also help you appear early on search result pages. This is an excellent marketing tool to use in conjunction with SEO. With this form of advertising, you typically only pay when someone clicks on your ad.
  4. Do establish a social media presence. It is important to create new and exciting content that readers are compelled to share with their social networks. Your content must be fresh and new to gain the desired traffic.
  5. Do pay attention to your online reputation. Reputation management includes monitoring what others are saying about your company. Negative reviews will cause many searchers to shy away from your company. It is essential to address complaints and answer negative feedback as best you can. In addition, it is possible create links from positive feedback back to your website.

5 Don’ts for Website Marketing

  1. Don’t fall for SEO hype. It is easy to be sold on promises like appearing on hundreds of search engines, but keep in mind there are only four primary search engines that handle about 95% of all internet searches.
  2. Don’t pay to try to get the #1 ranking. These claims can not be guaranteed through legitimate means. Keep these questions in mind when facing similar claims: Do you get to choose your own keyword? Do you get to change the keyword if it doesn’t generate good traffic? Most of these offers aren’t credible, so be careful.
  3. Don’t duplicate content. Google has actually started to punish websites that have duplicated content. Your website design and social media postings must be fresh and original to achieve good results.
  4. Don’t ignore social media. One bad review can ruin your reputation. An essential step is to closely manage the posts made by your staff as well as your customers. By doing so, you will be able to catch any potential catastrophe early.
  5. Don’t start over on your website. If your old website is not gaining ground, consider a redesign instead of building a new site from scratch. Pay attention to your site map and URL’s; failure to redirect thoroughly can result in Google listing your site as a duplicate and punishing your ranking, or you could end up with hundreds of dead-end links.
